Fall 2009 Outreach Activities:

Special Offering for UMCOR for Disaster Relief

In October, the congregation took a special offering for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR is the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid organization of the United Methodist Church. Funds collected through this special offering were used to help UMCOR assist victims of three recent natural disasters in Asia and the South Pacific.

  • The typhoons in the Philippines

  • The earthquake and tsunamis in American Samoa, Samoa, and Tonga

  • The earthquakes in Indonesia

These disasters have killed approximately 1,000 people and left thousands more homeless. UMCOR is partnering with local churches, Church World Service, and other organizations to meet victims' immediate needs for food, potable water, clothing, shelter, and medical care and to carry out longer term reconstruction projects.

Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Alameda County Community Food Bank

During the month of November we held our annual food drive for the Alameda County Community Food Bank. As Alameda County's central clearinghouse for donated food, the Food Bank distributed 16.4 million pounds of food during the fiscal year completed on June 30, 2009. The Food Bank partners with 275 agencies across Alameda County including food pantries, soup kitchens, child-care centers, senior centers, after-school programs and other community-based organizations. The recession has increased the number of persons seeking assistance from the Food Bank and its partner agencies.

CROP hunger walk:

CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty)

CROP hunger walk: Neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting.

This year's hunger Walk event was held Sunday, April 25 at 1:30 pm at the YEAH Shelter (1744 University Ave, Berkeley).

Held in nearly 2,000 communities in the US, the CROP Walk raises awareness about people around the world who must walk to find food, water, firewood, freedom and other necessities of life and raise funds to help stop hunger wherever it exists.

We had East bay Crop hunger walk on Sunday, April 20 at 2:00 PM at Lake Merritt UMC.

We had more people participated this year. The whole congregation also supported the walk with generous donation.
